Malaysian artist Chan Kok Hooi’s first solo exhibition in Singapore, featuring a mix of new works and some of his best known works from previous series. Chan’s work tackles the subject of ‘No Beauty’, often ridiculing the relationship between art and money.

2 / Edited Utopias – Michael Lee & Bob Matthews / Presented by Give Art Space (Singapore)

A two-man exhibition of new works by Michael Lee (Singapore) and Bob Matthews (UK) using architectural and ecological utopias as prisms through which to view the human condition. The works were first shown at the National Museum of Singapore in November 2011. This exhibition features an edited version of the exhibition Utopias and includes extracts from Lee’s series After Humans and Dioramas, Matthews’ digital drawings and watercolours and a collaborative series titled The Great Levellers.

A first-ever solo exhibition in Singapore by renowned Indian artist, Mithu Sen, who displays an acute awareness of socio-political realities in her work, and a smart sense of political acumen laced with witticism and sarcasm. STPI kicks off the New Year with a collaborative exhibition with New York-based gallery Lehmann Maupin, responsible for cultivating the careers of an international roster of visionary and historically significant artists, including Teresita Fernández (USA), Do Ho Suh (Korea/USA) and Ashley Bickerton (Bali, Indonesia), three artists who have also completed residences at STPI. This exhibition is a dynamic endeavour featuring the diverse oeuvre of these international artists in Singapore.

5 / Limited Movement / Presented by MoCA Loewen (Singapore)

An exhibition by Sui Jianguo, one of China’s most important and influential artists today. Sui’s latest work transforms the space into a darkened room where a hulking steel box stands. Looking through one of the two viewing ports in the structure, the viewer catches fleeting glimpses of the huge steel ball rolling about within. However, given the obscured view and erratic movement of the ball, it is almost impossible to predict the next collision.

An exhibition of a series of limited edition photographs that document the project, TEN THOUSAND WAVES, a nine screen video installation which features Maggie Cheung, Zhao Tao, Yang Fudong, and poems by Wang Ping as commissioned by Julien and shot on location in China. The work poetically weaves together stories linking China’s ancient past and present. Through a visually sumptuous installation the work explores the movement of people across countries and continents and meditates on unfinished journeys.
